GT-Rは確かに貴重な存在である。それは誰もが認めるはずだ。レースで勝つことを宿命付けられ、その宿命をまっとうし、そして今年のモーターショーで最新型のR35GT-Rとなった。レースでの輝かしい成績、世界各国に散らばる熱狂的なファンの存在。<br />

GT-Rの功績は称えなければならない。しかし、GT-Rが日本を飛び越えて世界でも名を轟かせる一台となったのは、数々のライバルの存在があったからに他ならない。ライバルの存在なくしては、今のGT-Rはなかったとも言える。<br />
<br />
今回は、そんなGT-Rのライバルにスポットを当てた。’64年に開催された第2回日本グランプリでのポルシェとの死闘、国内JGTCでのスープラ、NSXとの三つ巴決戦など、レースシーンにおいてはさらにライバル関係が際立つことになる。そのほかにも、ランエボやインプレッサSTI、RX-7など、レースシーンのみならず“宿命”の二文字が似合うライバルばかりである。<br />

<h4 class="title2">Cクラスのトランクスペースはごくごく平均的</h4>
Dセグメントと呼ばれるサイズ分類に入る両車。ミディアムセダンでトランク容量も大きく変わるわけではないが、使い勝手には差があった。<br />
<br />
まず‘07年6月に日本でビューを果たしたばかりのCクラス。こちらのトランク容量は440L。先代より10Lほど大きくなっている。このテストで使っている段ボール（一辺32cmの立方体）はふたつしか入らないが、積んだ後も前後方向、左右方向ともに余裕はかなりある（もう少し余裕があれば3つ積めそうだった）。奥行きがかなりあるのに、前後に二つ積めないのはリアシートの傾斜があるため。<br />

トランク形状はオーソドックスなセダン・スタイルで、普通に使う分には何の問題もない。大人4人で数泊のツーリングに出かける場合でも、荷物が入らなくて困る……ということはないだろう。開口部も大きく荷物の出し入れはしやすい。
<h4 class="title2">トランクにも細かい配慮がある3シリーズ</h4>
対する3シリーズだが、こちらのトランク容量は460L。Cクラスではネットで仕切られていた（トランク左側）取扱説明書置き場が、右側にむき出しになっている。計測用段ボールの積載数も2個だし、積んだときの左右・前後のスペースもCクラスと大きく変わらない。<br />

ただ3シリーズには状況に応じてトランクをフレキシブルに使えるような仕掛けがいくつもあった。まずはセンターのトランクスルー機構。長尺ものを積みたいときは後部座席のアームレストにあたる部分を倒すことにより、居住空間まで荷物をはみ出させる（突っ込む？）ことができる。<br />

さらにステーションワゴンやコンパクトカーが採用する後部座席の左右分割可倒機能を持っていることにも注目。これによりセダンでも乗員数や荷物の量に応じて、荷室空間を自在に変更させることができるのだ。<br />

その操作方法はトランク内のレバーを引くだけ。後席を両側倒したときは、計測用段ボールを11個積むことができた。開口部の大きさもCクラスより大きめ。<br />

またトランクのゲートの固定方法も、Cクラスが一般的な2ヒンジタイプであるのに対し、3シリーズはステーションワゴンのようなダンパー方式を採用している。<br />
<br />
セダンに乗っている人は経験があるだろう。トランクに荷物をぎゅうぎゅうに詰め込んで、いざゲートを閉めようとしたらヒンジが邪魔をして（ヒンジは閉めるときに荷室内に進入する）閉まらなかったということを。ダンパー方式だと室内に入らないため、この“がっかり”を解消してくれる。

居住空間とトランクは完全に別のものと割り切ったCクラスと、フレキシブルさをもたせた3シリーズ。分割可倒はもちろん、開閉部にダンパー方式を採用したことは日常使用で助かる面が出てきそう。この勝負は3シリーズに軍配があがる。
