<h3>差別化を図れて実用車ながら愛せる車たち</h3>
<p>「実用車」の定義は様々あるでしょうが、様々なシーンを勝手に想像したうえでオススメすることにしました。人がたくさん乗れる、荷物がたくさん積める、などといった実用性はもちろん、プラスアルファを感じさせてくれるものを選んでみました。気になる車は中古車カタログや物件をチェックしてみてください。</p>
<p>第10位はM・ベンツAクラス(旧型)。100万円もあれば、諸費用込みでも十分に狙えるようになってきました。M・ベンツがもつ“お金持ち"なイメージを極力抑えつつも、ちょっとほかとは違う差別化を図ることができます。デザイン会社とか、アパレル会社とか、横文字が似合う会社の営業車としてピッタリ。そんじょそこらのフツーの国産車を買うよりも、よっぽど実用的だし“こだわり"を車だけで演出できます。イメージを大切にする実用車、って感じでしょうか。</p>
<p>第9位はスバルトラヴィック(絶版)。オペルザフィーラの兄弟車として日本に導入された車です。オペルのものよりも排気量が大きく、それでいて新車時価格が100万円近く安い“捩れ"価格で話題を呼んだ車でもあります。大人7人が乗れて、多彩なシートアレンジで荷物もたっぷり積めます。国産車らしからぬスタイリングは、基がオペルだからです。最近でこそ低重心ミニバンって流行ですけど、トラヴィックはずいぶん前から採用していました。走りもイイんです。</p>
<p>第8位はM・ベンツE55ワゴン(旧型)。見るからに裕福そうなので、業種によってはNGかもしれません。ただ200万円台で狙えるって、かなり素敵なワゴンだと思いませんか?ワゴンの実用性はもちろんですが、本格的な高速ツアラーですから長距離移動にはうってつけ。とてもじゃないですけど200万円台で購入したなんて思われませんし、200万円台のワゴンでもっともコストパフォーマンスが高いでしょう。「200万円台だったんですよ」とトークのネタにもなります。</p>
<p>第7位はVWパサートワゴン(旧型)。もう何度もこのコラムに登場していますが、それほど賞賛に値する車なんです。特にオススメしたいのは「W8」という8気筒エンジン搭載モデル。ワゴンの実用性もさることながら、高速ツアラーとしてのポテンシャルを褒めたたえておきます。しかも見かけはVWらしく、ものすごく控えめです。とても高速ツアラーには見えませんし、高いのか安いのかもフツーの人にはわからないでしょう。そういった部分も魅力です。</p>
<p>第6位はトヨタファンカーゴ(絶版)。リアがガバッと開いて、荷物の積み下ろしに最適。コンパクトなボディながら、結構積めますよ。可愛らしいデザインは、意外に古臭く見えないので今乗っても全然安っぽくないんです。基は初代ヴィッツと共通ですから、狭い路地裏だってスイスイ走れます。ちっちゃい(ボディサイズも排気量も)ですから当然、燃費もイイです。花屋さん、ケーキ屋さんといった町の“商店街ビジネス"に似合うでしょうね。愛嬌たっぷりな実用車です。</p>

<h4 class="title2">高級感とSUVらしさを両立したフォレスター</h4>
国産車、輸入車問わずクロスオーバータイプのSUVがブームと言われるようになって久しい。多くはオンロード走行を意識した乗用車ライクな乗り心地が魅力のモデル。<br />
<br />
ではなぜセダンなどではダメなのかというと、荷物が積めるという利便性以外にSUV特有の“アクティブさ”に魅力を感じているからだとリポーターは考えている。<br />
<br />
またたくさんの荷物を積んで出かけるのならミニバンという選択肢もあるが、こちらにはどうしてもファミリィの匂いがつきまとう。SUVであれば出かける相手が同じファミリィでも、ミニバンよりもアクティブな自分（個人）を演出できるのだ。<br />
<br />
海や山へと頻繁に出かける人はもちろん、年に数回（あるいは1回行くか行かないか）という人にも受け入れられたSUV。もちろんオンロード性能や高級感は重要だが、この手の車ではどれだけタフに使えるかというのも重要なファクターだ。この章では装備類を中心に、両車のタフギアとしての性能を見て行こう。<br />
<br />
まずはフォレスター。旧型まではステーションワゴンのような低めのスタイルにアメリカン・マッスルカーのようなハイパワーターボという独自の道を歩んできたが、現行型になりその路線は大きく変わった。ボディを大型化し、いわゆる高級SUVとしての存在感を高めた。それに伴い装備類も高級志向のものが多くなっている。室内のイルミネーションや今回の試乗車に装備されていたレザーシートなどはその代表的なものだ。<br />
<br />
SUVとして撥水シート（XS、XTに標準装備）や荷室を便利に使うオプション類がきちんと用意されているのはうれしい。地味だがアウトドアシーンで重宝しそうなのはヘッドランプウォッシャーとクリアビューパック（XS-PL、XT-PLに標準装備。それ以外のグレードでメーカーオプション）。<br />
<br />
様々な気象条件の中で視界を確保するための装備なのだが、なかでもワイパーの凍結を防ぐデアイサーとヒーテッドドアミラーはアウトドアシーンでかなり重宝するはずだ。
<h4 class="title2">タフギアとして徹底したこだわりを見せるエクストレイル</h4>
一方のエクストレイルは存在自体がタフギアである。ウインタースポーツやマリンスポーツをとことん楽しみたい若者に向けてタフに使える“道具”としての車を手に届きやすい価格で提供するというコンセプトは、結果的に若者以外にも受け入れられて大ヒット。その考えは現行型にも継承されている。<br />
<br />
汚れないように気を使いながら乗るのではなく、汚れたら洗えばいい。取り外し可能なラゲージボードやウエットスーツと同等の防水性能を誇るシートはあらゆるアウトドアスポーツを楽しむ人にとって本当に便利な機能。それだけでなくフロアや天井まで防水加工（撥水ではないところがミソ！）を施すほどのこだわりをもっている。<br />
<br />
またアウトドアスポーツでは車内でウエットスーツやスノボのウェアなどに着替えをすることが意外に多い。荷物を持って更衣室まで行くのはかなり面倒なのだ。大勢で出かけた場合など、後部座席はまだいいが、運転席で着替えるというのはステアリングが邪魔でかなり大変なもの。そんなときにステアリングをバコッと上げて運転席を広くできるというのは脱帽もののアイデアだ。<br />
<br />
エクストレイルにはアウトドアシーンにおいて、こんなのがあったらいいのに・・・と感じていた、かゆいところに手が届くような装備が豊富に付いている。それが結果的にタフギアとしての性能を高めているのだ。

タフギアという切り口で車を見た場合、フォレスターに限らずほとんどの車がエクストレイルにかなわなくなってしまう。その意味ではフォレスターには不利な対決だった。エクストレイルはアウトドアで使える本格的な機能を満載し、かつそれが低価格で買えるというG-SHOCKのような存在。ファンが多くいるのもうなずける。
