「インプレッサSTI」と言えば、誰もがすぐにWRCでの勇姿を思い浮かべるはずです。確かに、インプレッサSTIの特別仕様車や限定車の数々を挙げていけば、モータースポーツ然とした車たちが並びます。ですが、そんなインプレッサSTIの中にあって、たった一台だけ異彩を放つ車があります。それが今回の“即買い”であるインプレッサSTI S203です。<br />

S203も他のSTIバージョンと同じく、STI＝WRCの法則に則ってWRCで培ったノウハウが数多く生かされています。専用開発されたブレーキシステム、ピストンやコンロッドなど各種パーツがバランス取りされたエンジンなど、当然のことながら車としての性能は折り紙付きです。エンジン出力に至っては、ベースとなっているSTI＋40psの320psを発生。ですがS203は「性能」だけにこだわった車でないと断言できます。<br />

特筆すべきはその乗り味です。適度に硬く、そしてしなやかに動くサスペンションは、まるで欧州車に乗っているかのような錯覚を覚えます。これは減衰力を4段階で可変できるサスペンションと強化ローダウンスプリング、ピロボールを用いたリアトレーリング／ラテラルリンクを使用したシャーシセッティングによるものでしょう。<br />

WRCでのイメージが先行しがちな“STI”の中において、S203はほかと一線を画したスポーツセダン。まさに開発コンセプトとして掲げている「グローバル ピュアスポーツセダン」を体現した車です。<br />

レカロ社と共同開発したバケットシートは、確実なホールド性と適度な快適性を備えます。これにより、ドライバーの視点は移動することなく一定に保たれます。これは車を運転することでとても大切なことです。また、視点が移動しないということは、体自体の動きも少ないということ。これが何を意味しているかと言えば、ドライバーが的確な判断と確実な操作が行えるということです。<br />

このシートは1脚で55万5000円のプライスタグを付け、デビュー時にはかなり話題を集めました。ですが、一度腰を下ろしてみれば、アルカンターラによる上質なシートの仕上がりに頷くはずですし、まるで体の一部のようにフィットする座り心地に満足するはずです。そんなシートに包まれながら、チタン製のマフラーが奏でる硬質なボクサーサウンドに耳を傾ける・・・なんてスバリストのみならず、車好きならたまらないシチュエーションです。<br />

S203は555台限定、その後継となるS204は600台限定。それぞれの新車時販売価格はS203が461万円、S204が481万円とベース車(S203：318万円/S204：341万円)からは150万円ほど高い価格設定。それでも、シート1脚で50万円オーバー(S204は1脚75万6000円！)、専用のチューニングなどを考えればお買い得としか言えません。<br />
