日本で作られた車両の形態的分類を表す言葉で、エンジンやキャビン、ラゲージスペースが一体となり、一つの箱のようなスタイルの車のこと。写真の日産キャラバンなどがその代表例だ。<a href="/contents/terms/category_465/_60303.html" style="text-decoration: underline;">キャブオーバー</a>トラックから派生したワゴンの総称だが、呼称が一般化するとメーカーも使用するようになった。<br />

エンジンが、フロントシート下や車体中央部の床下、後車軸後方などに搭載され、空間が広くとれる点が特徴。広いキャビンやラゲージスペースにより実用性が高く、新しいファミリィカーとして人気を博すようになるが、衝突安全性の観点や乗用車ベースならではの乗り心地の良さから、<a href="/contents/terms/category_531/_7901.html" style="text-decoration: underline;">1.5BOX</a>と称されるミニバンに人気は移っている。

現在カタログで一般的に使われている燃費の計測方法。<br />

かつて使われていた10モードは、市街地での走行をシミュレートした10種類の走行モード（加減速や定速走行）を組み合わせたものだったが、これに郊外での走行状況を想定し、より速度域の高い70km/hまでの15種類の走行モードを加えて計測するもの。60km/h定地燃費よりも、より現実の燃費データに近いものとして目安にされていて、エコカーではこの数値をめぐって激しい開発競争が行われている。<br />
<br />
ちなみに国土交通省がまとめた2006年のランキングでは、トヨタプリウスが35.5km/Lで第1位。

2BOXと同様にエンジンルームと居住空間およびラゲージスペースが2つの空間によって構成されているが、2BOXほどエンジンルーム部が大きくなく、箱形の1BOXと2BOXの中間に位置する車両のことを1.5BOXと称す。写真の日産エルグランドやトヨタ アルファードなどがその代表例。<br />
<br />
ただし2BOXとの線引きは非常に曖昧で、一部の2BOXとともにミニバンと称される場合が多い。
